Getting Started

Welcome to BasePack! This guide will help you understand how to use the app effectively for planning your outdoor adventures.

Web App

Completely free with full features. Sign in to sync your data across devices. No subscription required.

Mobile App

Free with core features. Pro subscription unlocks cloud sync, AI list generation, offline maps, and weather.

Quick Overview

  • Packs — Create packing lists with weight tracking, sections, and progress
  • Inventory — Manage all your gear, organized by categories and collections
  • Journals — Document your adventures with photos, notes, and GPS locations
  • Gear Database — Explore community-sourced gear with weight data

Packing Lists

Packing lists (or "Packs") help you organize what to bring on each trip. Track weights, check off items as you pack, and see your progress at a glance.

Creating a Pack

  1. Click the + New Pack button
  2. Give your pack a name (e.g., "JMT Thru-Hike 2025")
  3. Optionally set dates, season, and duration
  4. Start adding items to sections

Sections

Items are organized into sections (like "Shelter", "Sleep System", "Cooking"). Sections are local to each pack — you can name them however you like.

  • • Create new sections with the + button
  • • Long-press a section header to rename or delete it
  • • Drag sections to reorder them

Adding Items

There are several ways to add items:

  • Quick Add — Type a name and add instantly
  • From Inventory — Import items you've already tracked
  • From Gear Database — Search community gear with weights
  • Import CSV/JSON — Bring lists from Lighterpack, etc.

Weight Tracking

Track your pack weight with automatic calculations:

  • Base Weight — Gear you carry minus consumables and worn items
  • Total Weight — Everything including food, water, and worn
  • Weight Chart — Visual breakdown by section
  • Pack vs Body Weight — See if your load is sustainable

Packing Mode

Toggle Packing Mode to check off items as you pack. A progress bar shows how much you've packed. Perfect for trip preparation!

Inventory

Your inventory is where you store all your gear permanently. Think of it as your gear closet — organized and ready to pack.

Categories & Collections

Inventory is organized in a two-level hierarchy:

  • Categories — High-level groups (Shelter, Sleep System, Cooking, Electronics)
  • Collections — Specific gear types within categories (Tents, Tarps, Hammocks)

Adding Gear

  1. Open the Inventory page
  2. Click the + button to add a new item
  3. Enter name, weight, price, and other details
  4. Assign to a category and collection
  5. Your gear is now available to add to any pack!

Linked Items

When you add an inventory item to a pack, you can link it. Linked means updates to weight or other details sync between inventory and all packs using that item. Unlinked items are independent copies.

Trip Journals

Document your adventures with trip journals. Add photos, write notes, and record GPS locations to remember every detail.

Journal Types

  • 🥾Trail Journal — For hiking and backpacking trips
  • ✈️Travel Journal — For general travel and exploration
  • 📖Trip Report — Detailed write-ups to share with others
  • 📝General — Any other outdoor notes

Adding Entries

Each journal can have multiple entries:

  • • Add photos from your camera roll or take new ones
  • • Write notes about your day, conditions, or observations
  • • Tag your location with GPS coordinates
  • • Record the date and time automatically

Sharing Journals

Share your journals publicly on the Explore page so others can find inspiration for their own adventures. You control what's public and what stays private.

Trip Itinerary

Plan out each day of your trip with the Itinerary tab. Set locations, see weather forecasts, and add notes for each day.

Day Planning

In the Itinerary tab of any pack:

  • • Add days based on your trip dates automatically
  • • Set a location for each day (camp, town, trailhead)
  • • View weather forecasts for each location (Pro)
  • • Add notes about mileage, resupply, or special plans

Weather Integration (Pro)

Pro users see weather forecasts for each day's location. Temperature, conditions, and precipitation help you plan accordingly.

Consumable Types

  • Food — Meals, snacks, and nutrition
  • Water — Track water capacity and consumption
  • Fuel — Stove fuel, batteries, etc.

FAQ

Will I lose my data if I clear my browser?

If you're signed in, your data is safely stored in the cloud. If you're a guest, clearing your browser will delete your local data.

How do I upgrade to Pro?

In the mobile app, go to Settings and tap "Get BasePack Pro" to view subscription options. Pro is $2.08/month (billed $24.99 yearly * depending on location).

Can I use BasePack offline?

The mobile app works fully offline. Pro users' changes will sync automatically when you're back online. Free users keep all data locally.

What happens to my data if I cancel Pro?

Your data remains in the cloud. On mobile, you'll switch to local-only mode, but your cloud data stays safe. You can access it again if you re-subscribe or on the web.

Can I import from Lighterpack?

Yes! You can import CSV exports from Lighterpack and other apps. Just open a pack, tap the menu, and select "Import".

Can I export my data?

Yes! You can export your packing lists as CSV files at any time. Go to any list, tap the share button, and select "Export as CSV".

Is the gear database accurate?

Our gear database is crowdsourced from the community. While we verify popular items, weights can vary by size and model year. We recommend weighing your own gear for accuracy.

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from Settings in both the app and web. This permanently removes all your data. See our delete account page for instructions.
